Mistral Zellige Tiles
As one of the oldest tile-making traditions in the world, Zellige tiles have adorned mosques and palaces for centuries. The Mistral collection reinterprets the heritage of Zellige tiles for the modern day. Tile makers in Fez, Morocco, employ time-honored methods that have been perfected and passed down over generations. The individually hand-chiseled tile pieces bridge the past and the present by marrying classic techniques of tile making with modern patterns and colors. Unique to Mistral, lead-free Italian glazes are applied to the Zellige tiles to achieve a striking, fresh palette curated for today’s distinctive interiors and exteriors.
Handmade Characteristics
Mistral tiles are made completely by hand in the same way authentic zellige has been made for centuries. This artistic tradition encapsulates a genuine expression of handmade tiles that results in “imperfect” but beautifully unique tiles that vary one from the other in surface, edge, and color. ▲ Zellige has traditionally been used in pools and fountains in Morocco. However, Zellige tiles do not meet US standards for use in pools, spas or other areas where it will be regularly submerged in water; and we do not recommend Mistral/ Zellige for these applications. Use of Mistral in pool, spas and fountains is at the discretion of the customer and no claims for damage will be honored for Mistral used in these applications, regardless of installation methods.
■ If used for flooring, expect wear and tear on the tiles, which may include glaze wearing off the edges, or chipping off the surface, as well as cracks, or complete failure of occasional tiles.
Special Notes
1. Inherent characteristics of Zellige tiles
Each Mistral mosaic and field tile will vary from the next. The following characteristics should be
expected:
- Imperfections on tile face
- Chips off surface off surface of the glaze that reveal clay beneath
- Dips and bumps on tile surface
- Thickness variation between pieces
- Uneven edging
- Wide color/shade variation between pieces and batches
- Glaze pooling
- Lime pops that expose the substrate
Variation between samples and tiles received is possible as handmade techniques of glazing make shade and color variation an inherent part of Mistral, and all authentic Zellige tiles.
2. Usage & Environmental Factors
Please review the Recommended Usage & Floor Applications (above) before purchase.
• Moisture Exposure: Mistral tiles are porous and can absorb moisture. They are not recommended for use in submerged applications such as pools. In areas with highmoisture, such as showers, ensure proper sealing and maintenance.
• Humidity: Ensure proper ventilation to prevent mold and mildew growth in areas with high humidity. If necessary, use exhaust fans or dehumidifiers.
• Freeze-Thaw Cycles: Mistral tiles may be at risk of cracking or spalling in climates with freeze-thaw cycles. Proper installation techniques and the use of a high-quality, penetrating sealer to minimize water absorption are essential.
3. Installation & Grouting
• Fragility: Mistral tiles are hand-crafted and can be more fragile than other types of tiles. Handle with care to avoid chipping or cracking.
• Surface Variations: Mistral tiles have inherent characteristics that cause variations in color, size, and surface texture. To achieve the best results, ensure your installer is experienced with this type of tile.
• Sealing: Apply a penetrating sealer to the tile and grout lines to protect against stains and moisture. Avoid using film-forming sealers on the tile surface, as they can alter the appearance.
4. Cleaning and Maintenance
• Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Do not use acid, alkaline, or solvent-based cleaners, as they can damage and discolor the tiles and grout. Stick to pH-neutral cleaners.
• Regular Cleaning: Clean tiles regularly with a soft cloth or sponge and mild, pH-neutral soap. Avoid abrasive cleaning tools that can scratch the surface.
• Spill Management: Clean spills immediately to prevent staining. Acidic substances like vinegar, citrus juices, and wine can etch the tile surface if left untreated.
